Specialty barbells are variations of the traditional olympic barbell. They are commonly used by ... athletes with mobility issues or injuries that limit the regular range of motion that is demanded by a traditional barbell. Alternatively they can be used to provide the body with a unique stimulus that cannot be achieved using a regular barbell. Specialty bars work by changing the areas of the body in which the majority of the physical load is placed. The most common specialty barbells include the safety squat bar, the EZ curl bar, and the hex/trap bar.
